Beats. Books. Blogs.

Battlestar Galactica!

So, this was not what I was planning on writing when I got on here, but I don't have the energy to be creative. My head hurts, I'm tired, and I hate packing. But here's the deal:
I want suggestions on new music, new books, and new blogs to read. I had a conversation with a friend over coffee and we agreed to exchange good stuff we learned of. So I guess the first step of that is actually finding those good things we both are seeking.

That's where you come in- unless "you" means "Lauren Hunter" because... well... I can't give you new music if you gave it to me, eh? And it's very possible that LHunt is the only person who reads this blogs. Who knows.

What inspires you? You turn on that song, read this book,  get updates from such and such blog, and you just feel motivated, creative, ready. I want to hear those. So, pull up your bookmarked blogosphere pages or check out that well-worn bookcase and throw some suggestions my way.

I'd love you forever.

...Not that I don't anyway.

(Please forgive my blogging tonight. I have a migraine and may not make much sense.)

Muahaha! I am just the FIRST person to read your blog, because I DON'T sleep.

Other than what we already talked about... I say:

Books: "You Shall Know Our Velocity" by Dave Eggers
Blogs: http://hyperboleandahalf.blogspot.com/

BAM!

Now everyone better follow my example and pony up the awesome.

(Oh, and making sense is overrated.)

inspiration...

pretty much the entire Flyleaf album Memento Mori inspires me to want to write. I can't express the feeling in words but there's just something that makes me want to tell a story. I'm not sure how to explain the story but i know it involves the troubles of broken people and their journey form darkness into light.

as far as books are concerned, I love C.S. Lewis. The Great Divorce is probably my most favorite book in the whole wide world. I'm such a sucker for allegory.

I don't really look at many blogs. Yours popped up on facebook and I was intrigued by the awesome quote from the office so I clicked on the link. I was intrigued by the post and so I commented. so tada! have a comment :)

I'm still reading, too. :)

Beats:
- Counting Stars, by Andrew Peterson ( sounds like Rich Mullins + 15 years of changing musical sensibilities)
- Tron: Legacy soundtrack (some of the best working music I've found in the last year, if it's creative work to be done)

Books:
Nonfiction:
- anything by David F. Wells.
- The Holy Trinity—In Scripture, History, Theology, and Worship, by Robert Letham (outstanding—it covers exactly what it says, but accordingly is long and at times dense)
- The Resurrection of the Son of God, by N.T. Wright (long, academic, occasionally pushing too far on a few theological points, and just excellent)
- What is the Gospel?, by Greg Gilbert (much shorter and easier reading than the others, also excellent)

Fiction: I read sci-fi/fantasy a lot, so if that's your cup of tea, check out Brandon Sanderson. If it's not, well, I may not be much help in the light reading category. Dostoevsky is a genius and everyone should have to read at least Crime and Punishment. The Brothers Karamazov is better, but it's beastly and incredibly challenging to get through (the first 1/2 or more is setup... in an 800+ page book translated from Russian).

Blogs:
In no particular order, and drawing on everything from humor to outstanding Christian thought:
- Mere Orthodoxy (Christianity and culture, with intelligence and style)
- 22 Words (humor)
- Between Two Worlds (Justin Taylor) (everything) (no, really, everything)
- Moore to the Point (Russell Moore) (Christian ethics)
- One Baptist Perspective (church history, focused on SBC)
- Refining Process (shameless plug: my wife's blog is wonderful)
- Tim Challies (best for his links to others content, though he has some good stuff of his own as well)
- The Adventures of Dr. McNinja (webstrip, 3x weekly, wonderful)
- Public Discourse (outstanding thought on ethics, politics, philosophy from a conservative [read: largely Christian] perspective)
- Pillar on the Rock (you didn't really think I was going to pass up a chance to plug for this, right?)

Beats:
Debussy, for realz
I second "The Swell Season"
unfortunately, I'm not the best to recommend music since I steal all mine from Lindy or Brian.

Books:
Well you've seen a lot of what I've been reading and what other people have suggested for me. I'll add to that list:
-anything by Jonathan Kozol
-memoirs of obscure people
-Dr. Seuss (reread them all and be amazed)

Blogs:
I, like most others, don't follow blogs as religiously as I could/should. I can give you some of what I do look at from time to time though :)

(unfortunately my computer is beyond dead at the moment, and I just have my regulars bookmarked. So until it gets fixed, you'll just have to make do with these)
